A Reference Tablet Announced by Intel for Android Developers

On 9th September, 2014, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus announcements may have taken over the airwaves. However, Apple was not only company to blow its users with announcement at the event in San Francisco.


Intel also started IDF, an annual developer conference of Intel, in Moscone West on Tuesday morning. This conference runs from Tuesday to Thursday, however, the announcement for “Intel Reference Design for Android”, were made on Tuesday during CEO Brian Krzanich’s keynote speech.

According to Intel, it has been collaboration of Google with Intel for making a reference tablet for Android developers and manufacturers. The main aim of Intel is to make easier for manufacturers to launch Intel-based Android tablets in the market as soon as possible.

A single binary image for Android will be provided by the company through the Intel Reference Design Program, Doug Fisher, VP and general manager of Intel’s Software and Services division, said through official Intel Blog.

Moreover, OEMs and ODMs will be able to select from a complete BOM specification or a pre-qualified set of components. In addition to, the company also going to handle the certification process for Google Mobile Services.

Manufacturers don’t have to do the leg work of developing a device which is the best for Android as the laying out a pre-approved list of parts and taking care of GMS certification is totally done by this reference tablet. After that, it also applies for certification from Google.

The best thing about manufacturers is they can get their device into production faster than before that means they can sell device faster too. It also delivers more consistent Android experience for users all thanks to level of consistency at the hardware level.

Apart from, Intel also assures its users to get guaranteeing updates for Intel Reference Design for Android devices within 15 days of AOSP updates. This company is also providing the service after 2 years of its launch. According to Intel, they are going to ship 100 Android devices based on Intel chips for this year.
